HABERSHAM, JOSEPH

HABERSHAM, JOSEPHAmerican statesman. Born in Savannah, Ga., where he became a leader in the agitation preceding the Revolution, Habersham rose to colonel in the Continental Army and also was a member of Continental Congress. Later he sat in the Georgia convention that ratifield the federal Constitution. Habersham served (1795-1801) as Potmaster General under Presidents George Washington and John Adams, and then headed the Savannah branch of the Bank of the Unitef States until his death.
