German industrial chemist who discoverd a practical method for the synthesis of ammonia from its elements, nitrogen and hydrogen. His first work was in electrochemistry and gas reactions. in 1991 he became director of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Physical Chemistry. Later he attempted to extract gold from sea water but was unsuccesful. He became a refugee from Germany in 1933. He received the Nobel Prize serves in 1918 for his ammonia synthesis.
