Late 7th-century B.C prophet of Judah, known only from the book which bears his name. There is no historical value in the references to him in the story of Bel and the Dragon in the Apocrypha. The problem faced by the prophet is the justice of God amid the confusions and contradictions of history; his message is that in innocent suffering, when might is right, :the righteous shall live by his faith” (Hab. 2:4;3:17-19). The date of the prophecy is probably between 625 and 612 B.C., when Nineveh, the Assyrian capital, was destroyed. A commentary on Habakkuk was found among the Dead Sea Scrolls.
